Toffee Brownie, Caribou

11 Mar

This is the first “commercial” bar I have featured on this site. The bar is not made by the loving hands of a matronly woman at a local church. Instead has been made in a factory, presumably in the Minneapolis MN area (Where Caribou is based out of), by an unknown person.

The bar itself is dense. It is almost flour-less. The bar was served warm, and the warmth really brings out the smoothness of the chocolate used. Caribou, for being a large company, does well with having good chocolate to serve their customer base, try a hot chocolate there sometime, super yummy. The toffee on top of the bar adds flavor, but not much texture. I hardly noticed the toffee bits when eating the brownie. I expected a crunch like a Skore or Heath bar. There was none. I wonder if this is an artifact of the baking process, or if it comes from the delay between manufacture and consuming of the bar.

The taste is fine overall, I wonder about the preservatives present though.

Oatmeal Bar

This bar was served for dessert at the Wednesday night Lenten soup supper at the church I serve at. It was not quite up to par with other recent bars. The matrix of the bar was an oatmeal held together with brown sugar and butter. There was a bit of gooeyness to the bar, and little crunch. The bar tended toward bland, with little flavor. It did really well at existing and that is about it.

Oatmeal Cake

Oatmeal Cake

I was able to experience this bar at the same meeting where I tasted the Brownie Delight. This bar features an oatmeal and cinnamon cake topped by a creamy coconut frosting. The cake is put under the broiler after the frosting is applied and toasted to bring out the flavor of the cinnamon. The cake had the perfect moisture level. It just melted away in my mouth, With the flavor of the cinnamon exploding forth like light when God spoke light into existence. This bar was the better bar of the evening.

I am fully aware that this is a cake. However, this blog deals with desserts that are served in bar shape, which this was. It was baked in a cake pan, like brownies would be.

Brownie Delight

I went to a church meeting last night and was able to try out this yummy bar.

The bottom layer is brownie, perfectly moist and chewy.  The upper layer is cream cheese with chocolate chips mixed in.  Sorry for the photo, it was taken this morning after the bar sat in the fridge overnight…
