Welcome to Hot Dish and Bars!
The idea for this blog came to me when discussing food a few months ago. Food is something that I interact with most days. Around west central Minnesota, food is often comprised of hot dish and bars. There is a wide spectrum of each. Suffice it to say, hot dish is a dish that is prepared in a casserole pan and involves some type of cream soup (mushroom, celery, etc.), vegetables, meat, and a starch (noodles, potatoes, etc.). The hot dish is intended to be the main course at a meal. Bars are sweet desserts cooked in a pan. Their consistency can range from cookie to cake, and often have some of both within them.
Working within the ministry, I am exposed to these delights on a regular basis. They are the common fare of potlucks, funerals, and any other gathering you can think of. Grandmas have recipes down so that if they hear you are coming they can whip a pan of bars up in no time to serve you with coffee on a pastoral visit. This blog hopefully will detail my journey though the unique foods of the Upper Midwest.
I hope you enjoy the journey!
